Change of National Operator
After 11 years we are passing the baton to Green Growth Asia Foundation (GGAF) as the new national operator for Eco-Schools Programme. With this transition, all future communications and correspondence on the Eco-Schools Programme will be coming from GGAF.

What is Eco-Schools?
Eco-Schools is an international programme of environmental and sustainable developmental education for schools. At the heart of the programme is a structured ‘change management’ process called THE SEVEN STEPS, used by schools to work towards continuous improvement in environmental action.
Currently, the programme is being implemented in over 50 countries around the world, involving more than 40,000 schools. Its adoption in Malaysia offers the promise of consolidating various environmental education efforts that are already in place in schools.
At the international level, the programme is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). FEE is a non-governmental and non-profit organization aiming to promote sustainable development through environmental education (including formal school education, training of staff and general awareness-raising). It is an international umbrella organisation with one national member organisation per country representing FEE on the national level and in charge of implementing FEE programmes nationally. It has 66 member organisations in 58 countries around the world.

WWF-Malaysia became an associate member of FEE in 2010. It also became the national operator for the Eco-Schools Programme in Malaysia. The implementation of the programme in Malaysia is supported by a National Eco-Schools Committee, made up of partners from the following ministries, government agencies, universities and organisations: Ministry of Education, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of Environment, Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam Malaysia, Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak, Sabah Environmental Education Network, University Malaya, University Kebangsaan Malaysia, University Sains Malaysia, Global Environment Centre, Friends of Kota Damansara, Malaysian Nature Society, and Scout for Nature.
Since the first school registered in March 2011, the Eco-Schools Programme in Malaysia has grown from strength to strength and more than 200 schools in the country have now embarked on the Eco-Schools journey.

Award Criteria
Green Flag Award
To help your planning, run a maximum of three Eco-Schools themes and encourage community participation. The Green Flag award assessment is done over both documents and a physical visit.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we have adopted a digital version of the Green Flag assessment to ease your journey.
Silver Award
After achieving their Bronze Award, your Eco-Committee will be eager to progress towards the Silver Award. The Silver Award assessment is a document-based assessment. Encourage whole-school participation and keep the themes to not more than three to ensure efficient planning and execution
Bronze Award
Once you have implemented all seven steps, you will be ready to apply for the Eco-Schools Bronze Award. On average, new schools take between 6-12 months to progress from registration to the Bronze award as this first stage is about setting the foundations to becoming a fully-fledged Eco-School.
